(Honest, unpaid review)
Salsa Mexican Grill is a restaurant that recently opened in the Nedbank Northridge Mall. They first caught my attention when I walked by and saw their decor. On the one wall, they painted this bright-coloured masterpiece and, out of the sealing hang lights that came out of faux wooden flower boxes, and the wooden beams above the bar made my heart skip a beat. Although the plants were fake, it still captured my attention enough to add this restaurant on my want-to -try- list.

And a few weeks later I ended up having lunch with my dad and he picked… Salsa Mexican Grill. The waitress was friendly and diligently explained the menu. The menu consisted of two parts: the first two-thirds consisted of meals constructed by the restaurant and the last third you could build your own meal. You also mark off what you want to order on the menu. It created an interactive experience, although I do not believe this is a very eco-friendly method.

I ordered a vegetarian enchilada, and my father chose to build his own hard shell taco and added a churros milkshake. Both the food and the drink took a while to come even though there were only two or three tables beside us. This gave us time to enjoy the atmosphere of this resturant. Spanish music was playing and the smell of churros being fried and onions being mix with tomato enveloped me.
When the food arrived I was pleasantly surprised by the hearty portion size. The vegetarian enchiladas were quite spicy even for me, who loves food with a kick, but it was still mouthwatering. The flavours of the fried black beans, coriander and lime rice, topped with red hot salsa, melted white cheddar and spring onions match perfectly and balanced each other out. Even now, a week later my mouth starts to water when I think about this enchiladas. It was also well priced at R79.

My fatherβs taco was crunchy with a tender chicken, cheese and onion filling.

The churros milkshake was quite sweet and needed to balance the extreme sweetness. I tried one of their churros on top of my fatherβs milkshake and found it to be devilishly indulgent but quite doughy. I am not sure how they are supposed to taste because it was my first try.

Overall the food was of good quality (8/10), the atmosphere was terrific (9/10), but the service was a bit slow even though the staff was friendly (7/10).
