Hello darlings, I hope that you all are having a sweet day.
Today I want to share my thoughts on Natsuki Takayaβs * (her pen name) manga: Fruits Basket. This book was not just the first book I finished this year but also my first manga. One of my dear friends lent me this manga after I expressed my confusion on where to start in the world of manga.
So, I sat down one afternoon and started to page through the manga and… I fell in love with it. I gave this manga a 4.5/5-star rating for three main reasons. Firstly, the storyline was woven beautifully incorporating both moments from the past with events in the present. The main storyline follows the protagonist, Tohru Honda, a teenage girl who faces various obstacles in her daily life but always tries to keep her chin up. Luckily, her fortune is about to change when she runs into the Sohma family, but all is not as simple as it seems.
Secondly, the characters all have a level of depth to them which kept me intrigued till the end. My favourite character so far is Saki Hanajima because of her darker and more mysterious expressions.
Also, the manga was humorous and entertaining, whilst dealing with important themes such as grieve, self-love and acceptance, conflict and finding your place in society.
I will highly recommend it to anyone that wants a sweet story filled with humour, mysterious and colourful characters and a fast-paced storyline. This manga is easy to follow after you read through a few pages and understand the layout. If reading mangas are not up your alley, you can try the anime series based on this manga: Fruits Basket (2001), Fruits Basket (2006) and Fruits Basket (2019).
I would love to read the next volume of this manga series and see how both the characters and the writer develops.
Thanks for reading.
Love,
B
